International Conference of the Department of Arabic Language Held at Faculty of Arts, Cairo University

Under the patronage of Dr. Mohammed Othman Al Khasht, Dr. Ahmed Al-Sherbini, Dean of the College, and Dr. Khairi Douma, Head of the Arabic Language Department at the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, the annual conference of the Department of Arabic Language was held under the title “Arabic Language in the 19th Century: Issues of Transformation and Transition”. The conference is expected was held at the conference room of the college from 12 to 14 March.

Conference sessions discussed issues of Arab history in the 19th century: “The Elite and The Public”, Development and Modernity and literary genres in the 19th century.

Participants from Egypt, the Arab world and from around the world discussed issues of transition, transformation and language, as well as confronting colonial and romantic schemes and their influence on Al Mahjar poetry and national poetry during the transition period (Rifa’a Al-Tahtawi as an example).

The conference shed light on issues of education in the 19th century, its results, translation movement, its impact on Arabic literature and language in Ottoman documents in the 19th century, the image of Egypt as an analytical approach of Arabic texts, phases of Arabic poetry and forms of transformation at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
