Translation’s Effective Role in UAE Civilizational Renaissance

The aspects and manifestations of the civilizational renaissance witnessed in the UAE are varied, and its accomplishments and milestones are evident in all social, scientific, cultural, economic and urban life spheres, all of which are the products of an insightful vision of a rational leadership focused on building a human being above all.

In addition, efforts aim to arming humans with science of all kinds and sources and honing their skills and talents through providing sources of knowledge that enhance their creativity and innovation abilities. The UAE civilizational renaissance enables people to absorb all the new developments on the world scene.

In order for knowledge to be comprehensive and integrated, and for Emirati people residing on this good land to be able to interact in an optimal manner with knowledge and science and to be affected and influenced by them, and to receive them in proportion to their interests and aspirations, the state has paid great attention to the translation process from other languages into Arabic language.

UAE considers translation as a receptacle to accommodate the scientific, literary and technical innovations of other nations, and a useful way to converge ideas and understand the other and see his experiences, and thus enhance understanding among peoples and strengthen the bonds and relations with them towards coexistence and mutual respect.

In order to frame and support translation efforts and create a sustainable channel for the same, the Abu Dhabi Government, through the Department of Culture and Tourism, launched in 2007 the “Kalima” initiative with the generous support and care of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, to revive the translation movement in the Arab world and support the active cultural movement taking place in Abu Dhabi.

The “Kalima” project, which has been in existence for nearly 13 years, has supplemented the knowledge and cultural scene with hundreds of books translated from and to various languages, and the foundations of an Arab cultural and scientific renaissance that includes various branches of human knowledge in which the book represents the cornerstone, in addition to organizing events and activities related to translation.

The literature of this ambitious project says, “It seeks to translate as many foreign languages as possible, and so far it has succeeded in translating into more than 13 languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Hindi, Turkish, Chinese, Swedish, Italian, and Dutch, And Russian, Polish, and Kurdish », which makes it one of the largest, if not the largest, modern entrepreneurial projects on the Arab level, seeking to enrich the Arabic language with the knowledge of other peoples and nations.

This initiative has contributed, according to concerned officials, to translating and publishing various works into the Arabic language, and on topics that varied between natural and human sciences, international literature, novels and children’s literature. The project has also established a database of “translators” that includes more than 600 names specialized in various fields. Those translators are worthy of admiration and pride, especially in light of the decline in knowledge production witnessed in the Arab world, and weakness of translation movement.

The UAE has become a point of radiation, a habitat of creativity and a platform for ideas and recent initiatives that seek to spread peace and cooperation among peoples for the happiness of man, and it is something that we should be proud of.
